How to Arrange Furniture in a Small Bedroom: Designer Tips
How to arrange furniture in a small bedroom starts with one decision: give the bed a comfortable place to land, then make every other piece earn its space.
A small bedroom can feel calm, polished and easy to move through. The secret is to plan around the room’s actual measurements rather than buying smaller versions of everything.
As a Designer and True Color Expert®, I use these furniture layout strategies to help clients get more function and beauty from the space they have.

What you’ll learn
These designer tips will guide you on how to arrange furniture in a small bedroom:
- How to choose the best bed placement
- Where to place a TV
- Genius furniture ideas that do double duty
- Create comfortable walkways
- Maximize storage without clutter

Step 1 – How to Arrange Furniture in a Small Bedroom: Start With a Floor Plan
Before moving furniture, measure the room and sketch its shape. Mark the doors, windows, closet openings, outlets and any heating or cooling vents. Then measure your existing furniture, including the depth of dresser drawers when they’re open.
Use painter’s tape to outline the bed and larger pieces on the floor. Walk around them. Can you open the closet? Pull out a drawer? Make the bed without squeezing against a wall? This quick exercise can save you from ordering furniture that fits on paper but frustrates you every day.
Designer measurement tip: Aim for about 24 inches of walking space beside the bed when the room allows it. More is comfortable, but a tight bedroom may require less on one side. Check the bed frame’s outside dimensions: its headboard and rails may be wider than the mattress.

Step 2 – Place the Bed First
The bed is usually the largest piece in a small bedroom, so position it before deciding where the dresser or nightstands should go.
Center the Bed on a Clear Wall When Possible
Placing the headboard against a clear wall gives the room an orderly focal point. If two people use the bed, try to preserve access from both sides. The bed does not have to be perfectly centered if shifting it a few inches makes a closet or doorway easier to use.

Center the Bed Between 2 Windows
This bedroom layout creates beautiful symmetry and focal point for art above the bed!
Place the nightstands in front of the windows. Make sure table lamps don’t block curtains from opening and closing.

Place the Bed In Front Of A Window
A window wall can also work when it’s the best option. Choose a headboard that suits the window height, and make sure you can still reach the window coverings. Select a low headboard that won’t block the window.
Add roman shades and fixed curtains so you don’t have to wrestle with closing drapes behind the bed.
Motorized curtains also work well – make sure you leave enough clearance from the headboard, for them to open and close.

Use a Corner Layout When Floor Space Matters More
In a very narrow bedroom, a guest room or a child’s room, pushing one side of the bed against a wall can free up valuable floor space. It is less convenient to make the bed, so consider how the room will be used before choosing this layout.
Design rule – Leave at least 20-24″ between the bed and a wall to have enough space to make the bed.
Two corner layout ideas:

Multifunctional Bed Ideas
For a small bedroom I recommend choosing a bed that’s multifunctional such as:
Lift Up Storage Bed
- a lift-up storage bed that has a large under-bed storage space to store extra bedding, clothing, shoes, towels and other items. The under-bed storage includes a dust-proof cover to protect your belongings from dust, making it ideal for small bedrooms or apartments where storage space is limited. This can replace a dresser to maximize a small bedroom!
- this lift up storage bed has an adjustable headboard and comes in 3 beautiful neutrals
- this lift up storage bed comes in a cozy, stylish modern corduroy fabric making it so soft and cozy!

Bed with Built In Pull-Out Drawers
- A stylish bed with 4 pull-out storage drawers in the base to store clothing, bedding ect
- This gorgeous storage bed has 4 pull-out side drawers and one large drawer at the end of the bed – for even more storage!

Murphy Bed
- a wall mounted murphy bed with built-in shelves for storage, books and decor display! It can be folded away into a cabinet to open up floor space in any room. This murphy bed is less than 16″ deep so it doesn’t take up much room when it’s folded and comes in full and queen size and in 4 colors!
- This beautiful white murphy bed is only 20″ deep and has built in shelves and drawers for storage!
light wood murphy bed with builtin shelves – available in 4 colors

- a murphy bed cabinet – that folds up into a cabinet with drawers! It can store bedding, clothing in the drawer, charge devices and converts from a stylish cabinet to queen bed in minutes.
- this murphy bed cabinet is available in full and queen and has a large drawer and built-in charging station
- this stylish light wood murphy bed cabinet also has a storage drawer and built-in charging station

Step 3 – Add 1-2 Nightstands
Once the bed is placed, add only the pieces that solve a real need. A bedroom does not automatically need two matching nightstands, a dresser, a bench and a chair.
A drawer nightstand that charges can hold bedside essentials and charge devices.
If space is tight on one side, pair it with a narrow nightstand or a small wall-mounted floating nightstand with drawer.

Step 4 – Add a Dresser
I recommend a small 3 drawer dresser with curved edges – no sharp edges that can bruise hips and legs in a tight spaced bedroom!
Maximize the small bedroom size by placing the small dresser by the bed to double it as the nightstand! Add a table lamp for reading in bed and some decor to style it.
If you don’t have room for a dresser add this bookshelf cabinet with doors – it’s gorgeous, only 31″ wide and 14″ deep, and stores clothing, bedding and has beautiful shelf display for art, vases, decorative books ect.
Decide Whether the Dresser Belongs in the Room
- If the closet provides enough storage, removing a bulky dresser may make the bedroom work better.
- A dresser or 2 can be placed right in the closet as well!
- Add a shoe storage cabinet instead of a dresser- it’s smaller than a dresser and can store purses, folded t-shirts and sweaters, socks and shoes!
- If you need a dresser, try a tall, shallow dresser and check its drawer clearance before buying.
- A low dresser beneath a window may be another option if it does not block light or airflow.
Insider secret: Photograph the room from the doorway after each major furniture change. The photo makes crowded corners and awkward gaps easier to spot than they are when you’re standing in the room.
Step 5 – How to Arrange a Desk in a Small Bedroom
Whether you need a homework spot in a small kids’ bedroom or a workspace in a guest bedroom and office combination, thoughtful desk placement can help you make the most of limited space.
As a Designer and True Color Expert®, I recommend placing a compact desk beside the bed so it doubles as a nightstand, saving floor space while creating a useful workspace.
Choose a shallow design with an open base, and tuck the chair underneath when you’re finished working.
Before buying, measure the desk’s full footprint and allow room to pull out the chair without blocking your bedroom’s main walkway or closet doors. If you position it near a window, place your screen perpendicular to the glass to help reduce glare.
Finish with a small table lamp and one drawer for bedside essentials, keeping the desktop clear for everyday use.

Step 6 – Small Bedroom Furniture Placement With A TV
For a small bedroom with a TV, arrange the bed first, then position the TV screen where you can comfortably watch without turning your head.
As a Designer, I recommend wall-mounting the TV opposite the bed placing it above a low dresser so one area serves two purposes. Conceal cords for a clean look, and avoid mounting it too high—check the viewing angle from your usual resting position before installing it. The TV should be at eye level and 4-10″ above the dresser.
Have a bedroom TV and books? For a small dorm room, student rental or apartment I recommend this small 3 tier bookshelf to place under a small wall mounted TV. It doesn’t take up much floor space and will provide storage for books, baskets ect and ground the TV for a cozy, cohesive look.

Step 7 – Small Bedroom Lighting Ideas
Wall lights can free up even more surface space:
- these natural stone wall sconces have a beautiful organic modern look!
- these elegant battery operated wall sconces with shades come in 5 finishes and many sizes
- these battery operated wall sconces do not require hardwiring or outlets!
Make sure you have an dimmable overhead ceiling light or ceiling fan as well! Ditch the ceiling fan with cords – they make a room dated and cluttered looking!
This bestselling cordless ceiling fan is available in 2 sizes,5 colors and has remote control!
Step 8 – Use the Walls and the Space Under the Bed
Using the walls for a small bedroom layout
I recommend adding floating shelves to walls to use as much vertical space as possible.
- place odd numbers of floating shelves, 3 or 5, on a wall, or enough shelves so they go from the floor to the ceiling for a built-in look.
- floor to ceiling floating shelf spacing – hang the lowest shelf 5-12″ above the floor and hang the tallest floating shelf so there is 12-15″ between the shelf and ceiling.
- space floating shelves 12-15″ apart
- be very careful decorating the shelves – don’t clutter them or it will make your room look smaller.
- Add small baskets and boxes with lids to store items and disguise clutter.
- I don’t recommend adding floating shelves above a bed, but if you absolutely have to, then I recommend adding enough spaced out shelves (in the same color as the bed frame) so that the shelves go up to the ceiling, to create a built-in styled, cohesive look.

Add a tall wall mounted mirror to make a small bedroom look bigger.
A tall wall mounted ladder bookshelf with cabinet takes up only 24″ of wall space and can store clothing and books, decor, plants ect
Using the Space Under The Bed for a Small Bedroom Layout
I highly recommend a lift up hydraulic storage bed frame that stores extra bedding, clothing, shoes, towels and other items in the base of the bed! It’s especially helpful for small bedrooms or apartments where storage space is limited.
Beds that have under bed drawers, or neatly contained under bed storage bins on wheels can hold items you do not need every day.
Step 9 – Add a Rug That’s The Right Size
The best rug size: To ground the bed and make a small bedroom look as large as possible I recommend adding a rug that’s as big as possible to fit the room.
The minimum rug size: the rug extends 18-24″ beyond the sides and foot of the bed.

Step 10 – Let Color Support Your Small Bedroom Layout
Furniture placement does the practical work; color helps the arrangement feel cohesive.
As a True Color Expert®, I look at the undertones in the flooring, bed, bedding and other fixed finishes before selecting a wall color. A white that looks lovely in isolation may feel too stark or too creamy beside those materials. Test large samples in the bedroom at different times of day before committing.
Color tip: Repeat a restrained palette across the bed, window treatments and rug to create an easy visual flow. You can still add contrast through art, a headboard or a few darker accents.
If you’re considering white walls, my True Color Expert® White Paint Color Guide helps you compare whites by undertone, exposure and coordinating finishes.
Best Paint Colors For A Small Bedroom
I recommend either:
- A white paint color for the walls and trim to make the room look as large as possible.
- A rich, dark paint color, like Behr Grounded Color of the Year, will embrace a small bedroom’s size and create a cozy, cocoon-like feel. For an enveloping, color-drenched look, paint the walls, baseboards, trim, and ceiling the same shade. Or keep the ceiling and trim white for a crisp, stylish contrast against the dark walls.
Small Bedroom Accent Color Tip
Expert Design Tip: Repeat the accent color 3 times across the small bedroom to make it cohesive and pulled together!
Accent pillows, a throw blanket, wall art and decorative accessories are a great way to add an accent color, add style and coziness!

My Secret Design Tip: Check the View From the Door
Here’s a design check I use before calling a small bedroom layout finished: stand at the doorway and look at the first three feet of floor you can see. If that area is interrupted by the corner of a dresser, a chair or a pile of storage, try moving that item.
That clear first view helps the room feel more open the moment you enter. It also makes the route to the bed obvious. It’s a small adjustment, but it can change how the whole bedroom feels.
What If Your Bedroom Has an Awkward Layout?
Some rooms have an off-center window, multiple doors or almost no uninterrupted wall space. Start with the fixed features you cannot move, then compare two or three bed positions.
For each option, ask:
- Can you open the door, closet and drawers fully?
- Can you reach the bed comfortably?
- Is there a practical place for bedside essentials?
- Does the arrangement leave a clear route through the room?
Choose the layout that works best in daily life, even if it breaks a familiar decorating rule. A small bedroom that functions beautifully will feel more luxurious than one arranged only for symmetry.
If you’d like an expert plan for your own room, my Virtual Interior Design Services can help you choose a furniture layout, color palette and pieces that fit your space. It’s an approachable way to get personal design guidance, save time searching and avoid costly purchases that turn out to be the wrong size or color.

Small Bedroom Furniture Arrangement FAQ
Where should the bed go in a small bedroom?
Start with a clear wall that allows comfortable access to the bed and does not obstruct doors or closets. If the room is especially narrow, a corner placement may provide more usable floor space.
Do I need two nightstands in a small bedroom?
No. Use two if the space and your needs allow it. Otherwise, choose one nightstand and a slimmer bedside solution, such as a small table or wall mounted shelf, on the other side.
Should I put a dresser in a small bedroom?
Only if you need the storage and can open its drawers comfortably. If it blocks a walkway, consider closet storage, under bed storage or a shallow shoe cabinet for shoes, socks, folded sweater and tee shirt storage.
How do I make a small bedroom feel bigger without buying new furniture?
Remove pieces you do not use, clear the route from the door to the bed and try a different bed position. Then simplify the surfaces you see when you enter. Even a few inches of added breathing room can make the layout feel easier.
Can I put a bed under a window?
Yes, if it is the most practical layout. Check that the headboard does not interfere with opening the window, airflow or window treatments, and leave enough room to operate drapes.
Adding a roman shade and fixed drapes that don’t move, to a window behind a bed is a better idea than trying to close drapes behind the headboard. The roman shade will provide privacy and block light for sleeping while the fixed drapes will finish the window and make the room look and feel cozy.
If possible, buy a bed with a low headboard so that minimal amount of window is blocked.
