Step 1 – Divide Your Coffee Table Into Styling Zones
This is the first step when you are decorating a coffee table!
Before you place a single accessory on your coffee table, think like a designer and divide the surface into zones.
One of the biggest reasons coffee tables look cluttered or awkward is because decor is scattered randomly across the surface. Professional designers create intentional arrangements by assigning different areas of the coffee table a purpose.
For most coffee tables, I recommend mentally dividing the surface into three decorating zones. Decorate each zone of the coffee table, making sure each decor zone is connected by color and style for a cohesive look.
Coffee Table Zone Formula
Use this design formula when styling and choosing your coffee table decor:
Height + Layering + Personality + Empty Space = Designer Style
As an Interior Designer, this is one of the easiest decorating formulas I teach clients because it works with virtually every decorating style—from Organic Modern and Transitional to Traditional and Coastal interiors!
Zone 1: Height
This coffee table decorating zone is where you’ll place your tallest item, such as:
- A vase with greenery
- Fresh flowers
- Decorative branches
- A sculptural object
Adding height to the coffee table immediately draws the eye and creates visual interest.
Zone 2: Layering
This decor zone typically includes:
- Coffee table books
- Decorative boxes
- Trays
Think of this area as the foundation that grounds the coffee table arrangement and adds dimension.
Zone 3: Personality
This decor zone is where you can showcase smaller decorative items that reflect your style.
Examples of coffee table decor that have personality include:
- Candles
- Decorative beads
- Bowls
- Personal keepsakes
- Small sculptures
This zone adds character and helps your home feel collected rather than staged.
This is one of my favorite coffee tables! It comes in 3 shapes: square, rectangle, slim rectangle and rectangle with drawers! And also has 2 sizes – so versatile!

Step 2 – Consider function
One of the biggest mistakes I see homeowners make is over-decorating their coffee table.
Your coffee table still needs to function for everyday use.
When decorating your coffee table leave space for everyday use:
- Do you put drinks down regularly? Add a set of coasters for beverages and leave enough empty space to set drinks
- Do you need access to remotes? Add a decorative storage box to the coffee table to store them
- Do you need room for snacks? Place some of the coffee table decor on a tray so that you can move it easily for snacks.
- Do kids use the space? Avoid fragile materials like glass and use unbreakable decor like wood, resin or a woven tray
Always balance beauty with function when decorating.
Designer Tip:
Leave at least 50% of your coffee table surface clear of decor, so it feels practical and uncluttered.

Step 3 – Use the Designer Rule of Three
The third step when decorating a coffee table is to group decor into three categories.
This simple coffee table decorating formula instantly creates balance and layers of beautiful style.
1. Something Tall
Add one tall decor piece to the coffee table. This creates height and visual interest.
Examples of tall decor pieces:
- Vase with greenery
- Branches
- Flowers
- Candlestick
This Large Ceramic Vase is so affordable and comes in 5 sizes and 4 colors!
2. Something Horizontal
Add a horizontal decorative element. This grounds the arrangement.
Examples of horizontal decor:
- Coffee table books – stacked coffee table books serve a dual function: they are a structural design tool to add visual hierarchy and they offer a curated form of personal storytelling. Select books with beautiful covers on topics you love: travel destinations, nature, design, architecture, animals, plants, golf ect. I buy all of my coffee table books here.
- Decorative box
- Tray
This Designer Faux Coffee Table Books Set is a chic way to decorate a coffee table or bookshelf!
3. Something Organic
Organic coffee table decor makes every room feels more inviting when it includes natural elements.
Examples of organic decor:
- Greenery
- Wood beads
- Stone object
- Coral
- Bowl
I often recommend these affordable marble links to my design clients as a stylish, affordable way to decorate coffee tables, bookshelves and console tables. They are so stunning!

Step 4 – Layer Accessories
The secret to a designer approved, effortlessly chic decorated coffee table is layering.
Instead of placing everything separately, create visual connections amongst the decor items.
For example:
- Stack two books
- Add a decorative object on top
- Place a vase beside the stack
- Place a stack of coasters beside another stack of books
Layering decor creates depth and makes the styling feel intentional.
Insider Secret:
The most expensive-looking coffee tables usually have fewer decor items than you think.
Polished interiors don’t feel crowded or cluttered.
Use a Tray to Make Everything Look Organized
A tray acts like a frame for your decor.
It creates structure and instantly makes a collection of objects feel cohesive.
A tray is especially useful if your coffee table is:
- Large
- Ottoman-style
- Rectangular
- Square
A decorative tray also makes cleanup easy when entertaining!
Measurement Tip:
A coffee table tray should generally occupy about one-third to one-half of the table’s width for balanced proportions.
Step 5 – Add Texture for a High-End Look
Texture is one of the biggest secrets to creating a professionally designed room.
When decorating your coffee table mix different materials such as:
- Wood
- Ceramic
- Glass
- Marble
- Metal
- Linen
When all of the decor is made from the same material, the arrangement feels flat.
The contrast between textures creates visual interest and sophistication.

Step 6 – Add Color and My Expert Color Advice
As a certified True Color Expert®, color plays a major role in successful coffee table decorating.
The most beautifully decorated coffee tables don’t introduce completely random colors.
Instead, they repeat colors already found elsewhere in the room for a cohesive look.
For example:
- Pull a soft beige from your area rug
- Repeat black from your light fixtures
- Echo green tones from plants around the room
- Repeat blue from your accent pillows
This creates visual flow throughout the decor and helps the room feel connected.
Decor Color Tip #1
Choose coffee table decor that repeat two to three colors already present in the space.
Decor Color Tip #2
If your room feels busy, use neutral decor in varying textures instead of adding more color.
This creates a calm, sophisticated look.

Step 7 – Add Something Personal
The most memorable interiors include meaningful pieces.
Add one decor item that tells your story:
- A travel souvenir – I love to buy decorative handmade boxes and bowls from the places I travel to
- A family heirloom
- A candle you love
- A favorite design book
This prevents your home from looking like a furniture showroom.
Designer homes feel personal and collected!
