Here is the simple decorating formula I use:
- Start with the right console table.
- Add one large anchor above it, such as a mirror or large piece of art.
- Create height with a lamp, vase or branches.
- Layer in medium-sized decorative objects.
- Add a practical catchall.
- Introduce texture and natural materials.
- Edit the arrangement and leave breathing room.
Let’s look at each step in more detail.
1. Choose the Right Console Table for Your Space
Before styling the surface, make sure the furniture itself suits the location. A console that is too small can look lost. One that is too deep may interrupt the walkway and make the room feel cramped.
For a quiet-luxury or organic modern look, consider white oak, dark walnut, black wood, aged metal or stone. Simple silhouettes tend to be the most versatile. A console table with drawers also provides useful hidden storage in a busy entryway.

Console Table Measurement Tips
Allow at least 36 inches of clear walking space in front of a console whenever possible. In a tighter hallway, choose a table less than 14 inches deep. In a larger entryway or living room, a depth of 14 to 18 inches often works well.
When a console sits behind a sofa, it should generally be no taller than the sofa back. Aim for a table that is at least two-thirds the length of the sofa, but avoid extending it past the sofa arms.
Always measure the width, height and depth of the available area before ordering. Mark the proposed dimensions on the floor and wall with painter’s tape. Then walk through the space to make sure the table will not interfere with doors, vents, outlets or traffic flow.
For an open concept living room and kitchen make sure there is 36 inches from the edge of the counter stools when they are pulled out and the edge of the console table that’s in front of the sofa/sectional sofa. This will ensure there is enough space to walk through the spaces.
2. Anchor Your Console Table Decor
Every successful console table arrangement needs an anchor. This is the largest visual element and gives the smaller accessories a reason to be there.
Good anchor options include:
- A large mirror
- Oversized artwork
- A pair or trio of coordinating art prints
- A sculptural wall object
- A dramatic table lamp when wall decor is not practical
A round mirror softens a table with strong straight lines. Rectangular artwork creates a cleaner, more architectural effect. For an organic modern room, I love an abstract or vintage landscape piece with restrained neutral tones, soft movement and a touch of earthy contrast.

How High Should Art Hang Above a Console Table?
Hang the bottom of a mirror or artwork approximately 6 to 10 inches above the console table. This keeps the two pieces visually connected. If the gap is too large, the wall decor can appear to float separately from the arrangement.
As a general guide, your art or mirror should measure around two-thirds to three-quarters of the console table’s width. Use this as a starting point rather than a rigid rule. The visual weight of the frame and artwork matters too.

3. Use Height to Style a Console Table
Once the anchor is in place, add height on one side of the table. A substantial lamp is a practical choice in an entryway or living room. A tall vase filled with airy branches, seasonal stems or sculptural greenery also works beautifully.
The tallest accessory should overlap part of the mirror or artwork when viewed straight on. That slight overlap connects the tabletop decor to the wall and creates depth.
Avoid choosing stems that are stiff, perfectly symmetrical or too short for the vase. Natural branches should bend, reach and create some negative space between them. This movement keeps a neutral arrangement from looking flat.
Designer tip: If a vase opening is too wide and the branches keep falling outward, place a smaller watertight container inside it. The hidden insert will hold the stems in a tighter, more graceful shape.

4. Layer Console Table Decor in Different Heights
The easiest way to make console table decor look professionally styled is to vary the height and shape of the objects. If every accessory is the same size, the display will feel static.
Try combining:
- One tall item, such as a lamp or vase
- One medium item, such as a sculpture, framed photo or lidded box
- One low item, such as a bowl, tray or stack of books
Decorative books are one of my favorite styling tools. Stack two or three beneath a smaller object to give it presence. Turn the book spines inward if their colors feel too busy, or choose covers that repeat the room’s neutral palette.
Use odd-number groupings when they suit the space, but do not force every object into a group of three. Good console table styling is about visual balance, not counting accessories.

Asymmetrical vs. Symmetrical Console Table Styling
An asymmetrical arrangement usually feels more relaxed and editorial. Place a tall lamp or vase on one side, then balance it with a shorter grouping on the other. The two sides do not need to match, but they should have a similar visual weight.
A symmetrical arrangement feels more formal. Try matching lamps at each end with a centered mirror, bowl or floral arrangement. This approach works especially well on a long console in a traditional foyer or dining room.
For most organic modern spaces, I prefer controlled asymmetry. It gives the room a collected look without feeling overly staged.

5. Add Something Practical to Your Console Table
Beautiful decor should still support the way you live. In an entryway, add a decorative bowl or tray for keys. A lidded box can hide sunglasses, charging cords, a dog leash or small everyday items. A table lamp creates a welcoming pool of light in the evening. No electrical outlet? No worries! Use these rechargeable light bulbs that don’t require an outlet! These are handy for a table lamp on a console table behind a sofa when outlets are not nearby.
Keep practical objects contained. A tray visually turns several small items into one tidy grouping, which helps reduce clutter.
If the console has an open lower shelf, use matching baskets or substantial boxes to store shoes, pet accessories and seasonal items. Choose containers that nearly fill the shelf’s depth; undersized baskets often look like an afterthought.
For console tables that don’t have a lower shelf add two ottomans to sit when putting shoes on! Storage ottomans add extra storage space for shoes, gloves and scarves.
6. Mix Texture When You Decorate a Console Table
A neutral palette becomes interesting when the materials have contrast. Mix smooth and rough, matte and reflective, hard and soft.
For example, combine a warm wood console with:
- A linen-shaded lamp
- A ceramic or stone vase
- An aged brass or black metal object
- A woven basket
- Glass candle holder
- A marble or natural stone bowl
- Organic elements, such as branches or moss balls
You do not need one of every material. Select three or four finishes that already appear elsewhere in the room. Repeating those finishes creates a cohesive look.
Insider secret: Pay attention to the edges of your accessories. A curved bowl, irregular branch and rounded lamp base can soften a console with a boxy shape. If the table has curved legs or a rounded front, introduce one or two crisp rectangular elements for contrast.
7. Designer Sizing Rule for Ottomans Under a Console Table
Adding ottomans beneath a console table fills awkward empty space, grounds the arrangement and provides convenient extra seating without taking up additional floor space.
Together, the two ottomans should occupy approximately two-thirds to three-quarters of the open width beneath the console table.
For example, if the clear space between the console legs is 60 inches, the two ottomans together should measure about 40–45 inches wide, including the small gap between them.
Aim for:
- 2–4 inches between the ottomans
- 3–6 inches between each outer ottoman and the console leg
- 2–4 inches of clearance above the ottomans
- Ottomans that sit flush with or slightly in front of or behind the console’s front edge, so they look balanced without projecting into the walkway
The two-thirds rule creates a balanced, substantial look without making the space feel crowded. It is a strong starting point, but the clearance measurements should take priority so the ottomans remain easy to pull out and use.
8. Designer Rules for Baskets Under a Console Table
Adding baskets beneath a console table turns otherwise unused space into attractive storage while grounding the console and introducing natural texture to the room.
For most console tables, use:
- one large centered basket or two matching baskets.
- Choose one basket when you want a relaxed, asymmetrical look or need to store larger items.
- Use two baskets for a wider console or when you want a more balanced, tailored appearance.
- Avoid filling the entire opening with several small baskets, which can make the area look cluttered.
As a general designer rule, the basket or baskets:
- should occupy approximately one-half to two-thirds of the open width beneath the console.
- Leave 2–4 inches of clearance above the baskets and
- at least 3–6 inches of open space at the sides.
- The baskets should sit flush with or slightly behind the console’s front edge so they do not extend into the walkway.
For a standard 60–72-inch console table:
- one basket approximately 20–26 inches wide
- or two baskets approximately 16–20 inches wide each will often provide the right scale.
- Always measure the clear opening between the console legs before choosing your baskets.

9. How to Decorate a Sofa Console Table Behind a Couch
A sofa console table can define a living room with an open concept furniture layout, while adding another surface for lighting and decor. Because it may be visible from several directions, choose accessories that look finished from every angle, such as a sculptural lamp, ceramic vase, decorative bowl and stacked books.
Keep the center of the arrangement relatively low so the decor does not block sight lines across the room. Place taller pieces, such as a lamp or branches, closer to one end. The console should generally measure approximately two-thirds to three-quarters of the sofa’s width and sit level with or slightly below the sofa back.
If space allows, tuck one or two ottomans underneath for flexible extra seating and to disguise the back of the sofa in an open concept living room and kitchen layout.

10. Edit Your Console Table Styling
The final step is editing. Remove one item and stand back. If the arrangement looks better, leave it out.
Negative space is part of the design. You should be able to see some of the tabletop between groupings. A few well-scaled objects almost always look more expensive than many small pieces scattered across the surface.
Take a quick photo with your phone. A photograph flattens the scene and makes uneven heights, awkward gaps and visual clutter easier to spot. Check the styling from the room’s main entrance as well as straight on.
My Secret Console Table Design Tip You Won’t Find Anywhere Else
Leave approximately 20–30% of your console tabletop completely empty. This negative space is an essential part of the arrangement—not an area that needs another accessory.
Distribute the open space between objects instead of leaving one large empty section at the end. This creates small visual pauses that allow each lamp, vase, book and decorative object to stand out.
As a Designer, I find that about 25% empty space is the sweet spot for most console tables. It makes the display feel balanced, relaxed and editorial while preventing it from looking cluttered or unfinished.
Color Tips for Console Table Decor
Limit the main arrangement to a tight palette of approximately three colors, then let natural wood, black, white or metal act as grounding neutrals. A simple formula might be warm white, soft beige and earthy green with touches of black.
Repeat at least one color from the room on the console. It might be the color of a pillow, rug, artwork or nearby chair. That repetition helps the vignette feel connected to the entire space.
White accessories can look very different depending on their undertones. A creamy white vase may appear yellow beside a crisp white wall, while a cool white lamp shade can look blue against a warm greige. An entryway console should feel welcoming and work hard. Include a lamp for warm light, a bowl for keys and a mirror for last-minute checks. Add a basket or two, or two ottomans, underneath if you need concealed everyday storage.
Keep scented candles and strongly fragrant flowers subtle near the front door. A scent that is too intense can overwhelm guests as they enter.
Living Room Console Table Decor
In a living room, use console table decor to reinforce the room’s color palette and style. Artwork, books, a sculptural object and a lamp can create a layered focal point on an empty wall.
A 6″ deep, narrow console table can be placed between a wall and a sofa to add decor such as candle holders, a small cordless lamp and small accents, and add depth to a room.
Hallway Console Table Decor
Keep hallway styling shallow and streamlined. Wall-mounted art or a mirror adds impact without using valuable surface space. Avoid accessories that project beyond the edge of the console, where they could be bumped by people walking past.

When selecting a wood finish, pay close attention to its undertone. Warm woods have noticeable yellow, orange or red undertones, while neutral woods—such as natural white oak—lean beige or soft taupe.
