If you’ve been following along with me here at Setting for Four then you know I have an obsession passion for decorating my fireplace mantel! Give me any excuse….like a change in seasons…or a holiday… and I’m switching things around and adding different pops of pattern and color to it!

While working on my living room makeover last week I also decorated my mantel with the coastal look and style I so love for summer!

As I mentioned before, I grew up on the sandy beaches of a northern freshwater lake and as a young girl I spent each sunny day collecting shells and driftwood, catching minnows and building huge sand castles!

Mantel Decor Ideas : Blue, Taupe and White Palette

(Here’s a black and white picture of my boys when they were little playing on the exact beach I grew up on!)

Our family also lived in Virginia for 3 years and we spent every minute we could by the ocean, at Virginia Beach, collecting shells and driftwood, catching minnows and building huge sand castles with our boys. Basically reliving my beach baby years as a child!

So when it comes to summer mantel decor ideas I just naturally gravitate to watery blues, driftwood decor to add beach-side flair.

See this #QuickandEasy Living Room Makevover - Fireplace Mantel Decor

When it comes to my mantel the star of the show is this beautiful faceted mirror.

Mantel decor in watery blues, driftwood decor for a beach-side flair!

This mirror is big and sparkly and simple but chic…and I love how much light it bounces around my living room!

Candles and glass votives in watery blues add a pop of coastal color while the big driftwood spheres remind me of my love for collecting driftwood by the beach!

Starfish add a pretty pop of creamy white and another hint of coastal decor.  Mercury glass votives and candlesticks add more sparkle.

Coastal Mantel Decor Tips

Adding a large cutwork basket filled with throws is a great way to add some easy storage to my living room and adds another pretty layer to my fireplace.

Decorating tip: Adding a lantern or basket to the hearth of your fireplace will give your fireplace a cohesive look!  Did you know that your eyes naturally skim a room in an F Pattern? Adding decor with visual weight ( like a lantern or basket) to the hearth will help ‘connect’ the fireplace bottom with the upper mantel…. as your eye naturally skims from top to bottom in the F Pattern!!

I love how fab our fireplace mantel looks since we painted it from boring brown to elegant white (check out the fireplace mantel paint makeover). It looks so fresh and bright against our wall color (Sherwin Williams Mindful Grey) and with my new white drapes!

Lighting the candles at night adds a pretty glow when we are relaxing in our living room after a long day!  Ah – I can hear the waves lapping the shore right now!

This mantel looks SO inviting. I LOVE those Summer, Beachy colors also! I have loads of shells, star fish, sand dollars, etc, from growing up on the coast of sunny San Diego, CA. We also were lucky enough to get to live on the East Coast in Beautiful South Carolina for about 10 yrs so our shell collection just got HUGE!! I should start decorating the top of my side board as I don’t have a mantel. 🙁 Thank you for such eye candy as your deco skills!!!

Sounds like you love to collect shells too Chelle!! You could put all of those shells in bowls and large lidded jars to display them! Thanks for your compliments!
