DIY Button Heart Sweater Pillow

So obviously I’m the last person on planet earth to make a DIY sweater pillow!

They have been all over blog land the past few years and although I’ve admired every single one it’s taken me until 2014 to make one!

I may be late to the ‘mixing of sweaters and pillows game’ but I’ve finally joined the club.

I found a pretty white cable knit sweater at Goodwill a few weeks ago to recover a boring brown pillow and made this:

Sweet DIY Button Heart Sweater Pillow!

Supplies:

Easy DIY Sweater Pillow

Sweater

Pillow form

Thread

Buttons (I used grey and white buttons)

White Felt

Pink and blue embroidery thread

First, I cut out two rectangles from the sweater that were 2 inches wider and 2 inches longer than the pillow form.

Pin the two sweater pieces with right sides together.

Sew three sides together with a 1” hem,  leaving one of of the ends open to insert the pillow form.

Turn the sweater pillow cover right side out and insert the pillow form.

Sew on 5 buttons to the open end to secure.

Cut a heart shape from the felt.

Sew felt heart to the middle front of pillow using embroidery thread using a running stitch.

Add buttons as desired.

Embroider any message you’d like to felt heart using embroidery thread. I added an ‘Xo Xo’ message!

  1. Heather, I love all of the sweater pillows too - yours is adorable!!! I would love to make one, but I don't sew! Wonder if there is a way to do it with fabric tac or something similar? Julia

    1. Hmmm - I'm not sure Julia that fabric tac would work - but I'm not a great sewer either and if I can make this I'm sure you can too!! It's just straight lines! You could even hand sew it together if you don't have a machine! Good luck and thanks for your lovely comments!

  3. You are not alone, Heather, I have not made one yet either! However, yours may be the one to inspire me to tackle it! I love your simple, elegant take on the style! Forget good will, I have temperamental, fickle teens when it comes to fashion, I'm going to raid their closets today! ;)

  5. Adorable and I'm pinning this! I also haven't done a sweater pillow either (hangs head in shame), but this has inspired me to check the closets for unworn and unloved sweaters.
