I have some fun news today! Each month, starting today, I’ll be getting together with some fabulous bloggers to share with you guys some easy Thrift Store Decor Makeovers! We want to teach you how you can beautify and decorate your home on a budget with thrift store finds.  This month I’m sharing an easy West Elm Hack – Striped Basket Makeover.

I bought this wicker waste basket at my local thrift store for $3.99 – bargain!

Thrift Store Decorating Tip:

When I shop thrift stores for decor makeovers I concentrate on shape and texture , not color.

Try not to focus on the color – you can easily change that!

This two toned wicker basket has a great shape and I love it’s woven texture….and is the perfect size to use as a basket for holding flowers, flip flops by the back door, a throw, magazines….so many storage and organization possibilities!

I’m not loving the colors of it, so I decided to give it a West Elm Inspired Makeover!

These West Elm striped baskets were my inspiration:

Here’s how to makeover and repurpose this thrift store waste basket. This post contains some affiliate links.  Click here to read my full disclosure policy.

Supplies:

  • Wicker Basket
  • White Spray Paint Primer
  • Chalky Finish Paint in Yesteryear
  • Artists brush

Directions

  1. Spray paint the basket with two coats of primer. Let dry completely.
  2. Using the artist brush paint on one coat of Yesteryear. Use my picture to see where I placed the stripes. No taping is required – just follow the lines of the woven wicker. I painted on 3 wide stripes and two narow ones.
  3. Let paint dry completely

Pin it so you don't forget it!

This has to be the best themed party I’ve seen in a while. This is truly a REAL project that any thrift store and any person can do without much effort. And the result is simply beautiful! Love this basket makeover!

So very pretty. You have inspired me! I think I can find one of those baskets pretty cheap and may stencil something on it after painting it! I am sorely short of wastepaper baskets in my new home and would enjoy creating something instead of just buying something.

Thanks Corey!!! My local thrift store always has tons of baskets too, I’d love to make a collection of them with painted stripes. I always need storage for odds and ends and baskets are just so great for that! Have fun making some Corey! 🙂
