Help Me Disguise a Wall Vent!

I need your help!  Last week I posted Chapter 1: Our Move: The Good, the Bad and The Ugly where I showed you ‘The Bad’ damage we had to many of our furniture pieces, lamps and other belongings from our recent move.  I also blogged about ‘The Good’: The exterior of our beautiful new home!

Today’s post is about ‘The Ugly’….you know those things in a home that drive you nuts, that completely bug you and you ask:

Why did the builder put this light switch in the middle of the only non-window wall?  (I had that problem in a previous home!)

Or why did the previous homeowner actually choose a decorative Sante Fe/Aztec themed tile to place in the backsplash as a design feature?  (I also have this problem in our new home, which I will ask your help for in another post!)

Well today, my concern is this ugly wall vent.

This is ‘The Ugly:

We hung a flat screen TV  last weekend on a wall which also has a big white ugly wall vent.  It was the only wall that we could place the TV.

So how can I disguise this white vent that sticks out by the corner of the TV?  (Ignore the mess that’s on top of the chest!)

It’s driving me crazy because of course I want to hide it, but I can’t cover it up completely or that will cause a problem with air flow.

Seeking your help!  How would you disguise this wall vent?  Have you found a solution for an ugly wall vent in your home?

Thank you SO much for coming by for a visit! I love to hear all of your comments!

okay…first thought, spray paint it gray for now so it will blend in. Second thought…build something vented out of wood that goes across the entire length of the tv. Like a shelf with slats that you can put things on top of. Third, find an old shutter, paint it, then hang it horizontally across the top of the tv over the vent. With the slats, you should still get air flow, right? Thank you for giving me something to think about after my kids left for school…it was way too quiet here!

Thanks Jessica for your tips! All very helpful…..I thought of painting it too, but it would still bug me! I like the shelf and shutter idea…I will have to keep my eye out for a shutter. What exactly did you mean by a shelf with slats? Like a floating shelf?

You could paint the vent the same colour as the wall. Or you could do a gallery wall around the tv and the vent would blend in with the frames.

There are decorative vent covers you can buy, but if you were to do that I would suggest centering the TV with it so there is not this random off center decoration above your TV, lol!

Well that’s a really clever idea to create your own decorative cover!! I really like that idea!! Thanks for putting on your thinking cap for me Lyssalove!! So sweet of you to suggest this….really, why do builders put a dang grate at the top of the wall like that? Total eyesore!

Just make it a little larger and paint everything inside the frame including the vent black maybe.

Can you send me a pic of what you did? I have this exact same problem. The pottery barn link isn’t leading me to anything but tables right now.

Karen -believe it or not I haven’t done anything! Our bedroom makeover has taken a back burner while we updated other rooms in the house! I think I’m going to hang a canvas art piece on it and bump it out using plastic bumpers on the back of the canvas so that the air can still flow into the vent ….and create a little gallery wall around the TV. Once I finish it I’ll definitely post about what I did!

SO curious to know what you ended up doing! We have the same issue with an ugly air vent right in the middle of our living room wall. I cannot get the pottery barn link to load…

Ugh – that’s so frustrating that it’s in the middle of your wall! We painted it out the same color as our new wall color SW Pure White for now. I plan on covering the wall with these beautiful 3 D Wall panels to hide it better! You can see them here: https://rstyle.me/+biY47hHDW0qT1MsMcC7p7w They come in lots of patterns! Hope that helps! Let me know what you end up doing! 🙂
