Part 1 of my Designer Interview with Satori Design for Living left us wanting to know more of Shauna’s design style and vision…. so here is Part Two!
Read on for more of Shauna’s creative and stylish interior design tips!
7. You recently blogged about your entryway design plan. I love your ideas! What are some tips to creating a welcoming first impression to our entryway?
To create a welcoming entryway, I typically start by de-cluttering and finding a home for seasonal items elsewhere. Next, I provide storage hooks and/or baskets for each family member so everything can easily be put away. To freshen up the walls, I add wallpaper or soft-colored paint. Then I replace lack-lustre lighting with hurricane style fixtures or pendants. Lastly, I add a functional, yet beautiful area rug, a bench or chair if possible, and some artwork that shows off the family’s personality.
8. What do you believe are the home decor/design trends for 2013?
Color. It seems like everyone is injecting more color into their homes, even if it’s just a few decorative pillows or accessories. I’m also seeing bold graphic patterns.
9. What are your favorite ways to add color and texture to a space?
I prefer adding color and texture with decorative accessories and small furniture pieces that can be changed out guilt-free when you’re ready to mix it up. Think pillows, vases, baskets, throws and plants.

10. What do you feel are the key elements when designing children’s spaces?
Space planning and storage are key elements. Kid’s rooms often look cluttered because there are too many pieces of furniture crammed in, and storage solutions for the child’s particular needs have often been overlooked. I always like to find out what the child’s interests are. For example, if she’s artistic, then she’ll most likely need a desk with drawers for materials. Perhaps there also needs to be a place to hang her artwork and task lighting is a must. The function and dimension of the pieces come first, followed by the style.
11. What improvements can a person make to update their bathroom and kitchen without spending a lot of money?
Updating a bathroom inexpensively should always start with painting the walls a spa-like color, freshening up the grout, and updating the hardware and lighting. A new shower curtain, some sparkling accessories, and fresh towels also go a long way to make it feel new. For kitchens, many of these same improvements work well, but de-cluttering should always be at the top of the list. I actually helped a reader with this same question a bit ago in the post Bang for Your Buck Kitchen Updates.
12. With summer here what are some tips on how to decorate outdoor spaces and tips for choosing decorative outdoor pillow fabrics?
Think of your outdoor space as an extension of your home and how you’d like to use it. If you want to entertain in the evening, then adequate lighting and ambiance are important. Think about where you can add lighting. Will lanterns work or would a string of overhead lights be better? Will you require an outdoor fire source? As far as function goes, how many chairs do you require for your guests and how will you place them? Do you need a drink station or a table for food? Next you can think about the style of these foundational pieces to suit the exterior of your home. Is it modern, traditional or somewhere in between? Finally, think about whether your get-togethers are casual and laid back or a bit more formal. These factors will guide you through the furniture and accessories selection process right down to the final details.
As far as outdoor pillows go, again think about how you want the space to feel. For formal spaces, limit patterns and colors, and repeat the cushions from one chair to the next. For casual and fun spaces, I suggest a mix of patterns and colors. You can also read a guest post I wrote a while back on how to select the right mix of pillows for additional tips.
