DIY Tutorial for DIY Painted Burlap Union Jack Pillow Covers:

First make an Envelope Style Pillow Cover – check out my tutorial here!  Instead of sewing it, use iron on fusible tape.

Next stencil on your Union Jack Design using craft paint, a sponge spouncer and painter’s tape.

I did a test strip of various craft paints (grey, white, silver, gold and blue) I had on hand to find which color combination worked together best.  At first I thought gray and white would work but I ended up choosing a deep charcoal grey paint: Wrought Iron and a soft Metallic Gold color: Metallic Champagne.

I was going to write a tutorial on how to make the Union Jack design but it easiest to just google an image and copy it onto your pillow… just make your stripes line up in the middle, on the diagonal and centered to each other!

I have a couple of pictures of the beginning steps to get you started!

Start by taping off the center vertical stripe of the cross (a 3 inch wide stripe is what I used for my 18 x 18 pillow form), then tape off the horizontal stripe.

Using the pouncer add the charcoal grey paint and let dry.

Next tape off the rest to make the Union Jack design and fill in with more grey and the metallic champagne to create the pattern.

Pull off the tape and let dry. Add your pillow forms and you are done!

Although I was really sceptical of this DIY as I was doing it – I’m really happy with the way they turned out!

I really love the subtle sheen of the metallic champagne color next to the rich charcoal!

They add the perfect autumn rustic touch to my decor!  I really love the texture of the burlap with the graphic design of the Union Jack flag.

Your pillow is so cool. Could you tell me where you got that horse print pictured with it? It is the perfect mix of equestrian and cottage style!
