Benjamin Moore Shadow 2117-30
“It ebbs and flows with its surroundings, and light brings it to life. Rich, royal amethyst can fade into the soft lilac-grey of distant mountains or morph into lustrous coal. Indulge your mysterious side. Let Shadow set the mood.”
—Ellen O’Neill, Creative Director
Design tip: use a Samplize peel & stick paint sample of BM Shadow to test this color.
You can easily move it around your room, it’s mess free and delivered right to your front door!
This color has a lot of depth and saturation so if you like deep colors try it!
Benjamin Moore Shadow Undertone
The undertones of this color are blue gray.
Is Benjamin Moore Shadow a Cool Or Warm Color?
This is a cool color but it’s ‘warm’ feeling because of it’s deep rich color.

I love that deep color! It looks so rich and comforting. I have been looking to change my bedroom color and I think I just found it!
M Geric says
Love the deep color! It looks so rich and comforting. I have been looking to change my bedroom color and I think I just found it! Sweet dreams await!
Sheeila says
Iit is a beautiful color but much too dark for me! I think that in the winter it would be too depressing. I need some sunshine and brightness in our home:)
Sally says
I, like you, am not sure I would use this color. ( I would love everything in my home to be a neutral.) But I enjoy it when others can go with colors like this. Love your posts!
Laurie H. says
A beautiful rich colour. Thanks for the inspiration Heather.
Martha Durick says
I love this color and would use it in my dining room where I currently have a spicy brown.
Sally L says
I love “Shadow”. I would love to paint my bedroom with this color.
heather says
Shadow would look so beautiful in a bedroom – it would certainly create a room made for sweet dreams Sally!!
Terri Tervort says
I don’t think I’d paint my walls this color, but I love its deep richness.
Maybe my front door! Love your blog.
heather says
Thank you for your compliments Terri!! I LOVE your idea of using it for a front door color! It would definitely add major curb appeal to a home! xo Heather
Bonnie Schatzman says
I used this color on my front door and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!
heather says
I;m so glad to hear you love this color! It’s a beautiful choice for a front door! xo Heather
Starr says
I love that color! It’s beautiful! I can see that in a moody library.
heather says
Love your idea of using it in a library to create a moody vibe Starr!
Amy Jacopelle says
I absolutely love the poised taupe. I’ve recently purchased a home and we are moving in next week. I can not wait to see this color in my bedroom.
Candy Walsh says
It’s a beautifully rich color, but I don’t think it’s one I could see myself using in my own home, I like the Sherwin Williams pick much better. I really like your color picks, I know a lot of your rooms are Mindful Gray, but they all just flow together so nicely.
Thanks for keeping me up to date!
Sherry says
….once again I have to admit I was hesitant when I first saw Shadow….but then I realized through some of your examples how beautifully it could be used…..I loved the above comment about putting it in the cozy library……I am going to dream on that for awhile……Yep…..Sherman Williams seemed to ‘drive my boat’ though…….but what is exciting is how much fun you can have with all this color just from a paint can…..crazy fun…….
Suzanne says
I adore the Poised Taupe! It’s gorgeous. But, I live in apartment. So, I don’t want to paint and re-paint my walls before moving.
I usually decorate around a large Japanese silk screen that is gold, white and teal. Would it be okay to buy a couch in this Poised Taupe color and hang the screen above it? I definitely want to go with a neutral colored couch this time!
sydney85 says
Love the color from Benjamin Moore Shadow if I was still living in a house where I had lots of natural light to offset the dark color. Living in a condo I would use this color in my tv room/library where the dark color would look fabulous.
heather says
I love your idea of using it in your tv room – what a gorgeous color for a media room environment – pass the popcorn!! 🙂 xo Heather
Kelly says
What do you think about the Poised Taupe and the Shadow together? Would they complement each other?
heather says
That wouldn’t work in my opinion – they don’t balance each other and would ‘fight’ each other in the same space. Shadow needs more pure white colors to compliment it. Thanks for visiting Kelly and have a great weekend!
Mari Torre says
I like it probably more in someone’s home, not in mine, since I’m more for Earth tones, and more lighter ones too!!
Rust says
Shadow is a gorgeous color.
MARTHAIA says
I kinda like that color shadow I would paint a room in my home maybe office or craft room with lots of window..
Kathy says
Shadow is not a color I would use in my own home, I too prefer neutrals and a lighter, airy look. I do think Shadow might work well on a small accent piece, i.e. foyer table or bench, maybe a mirror frame?
heather says
I agree Kathy – I think it would look great on a pice of furniture like a console table or buffet. It’s growing on me though because I’m seeing it everywhere!
Denise Barkel says
Love the color shadow needing a new Gray for my bathroom, all I know for sure was it was going to e dark color
heather says
So glad you love this color Denise!
Laura says
I love this color! And I particularly like that you shared your favorite painting tools. I’ve added the color wheel to my husband’s Christmas shopping list 😉
heather says
Fabulous – so glad you like this color Laura! Thanks you for visiting – have a fabulous weekend!
Jacqueline says
I might be psychic but I just purchased a new duvet cover in a lighter tone of shadow. My bedroom is painted a spring moss colour. I will paint the wall behind the headboard shadow. I haven’t met a colour I don’t like so here goes. Now to find the perfect tall padded headboard and resurrect some old “Shadow” coloured glass and I’ll have a whole new look. Thanks for the inspiration.
heather says
Wow – that’s amaazing Jacqueline!! I think painting the headboard wall Shadow will look amazing!! So glad you found some inspiration with my post and thank you for the lovely comments! 🙂
Audrey Stewart says
I don’t know how I feel about this color. I love pastels.
heather says
Yes – it’s the opposite of pastels Audrey!! It’s always interesting to know what the trends are for color – I’m seeing it more and more in home accent color now too like pillows ect. xo Heather
Tina says
I just bought a new home and the master bedroom is 16×16 witha 10’ y’all headboard walll. My husband wants the bedroom to be dark because he works shift work. I was thinking of painting the headboard wall shadow and the rest of the walls maybe a charcoal gray. I am going to have dark hardwood floors. Would that work together? And what color for the ceiling? Right now the whole house is one color-light yellow—walls and ceilings
heather says
Hi Tina! Those are excellent questions! I offer affordable e-design paint color consults by email! Email me at settingforfour.com and I can choose wall and ceiling colors for you! xo Heather

Linda says
I love the poised taupe! Would take me a lot of deep thinking to get to the Shadow one. Maybe in small doses somewhere? If I were going that dark think I’d go with a charcoal rather than a purple. But that’s just me. I’m in the midst of changing everything from Tuscan reds and golds to the more neutral creams, tans and beige with a touch of a dark green. Sure could use the gift certificate for a more updated look in the deco items!!
Love the blog, pin a lot of stuff from it!! Keep up the good work.
Kay says
Thank you for showing these items and new colour. I would like it in small amounts in a
room, like a feature wall or something like that. It is a nice rich colour with white.
roe says
what do you think about shadow for a bathroom with bright white trim?
Tamara says
Thankyou for sharing the colors of the year! I paint for people as a side business, and love design, would love to study and be a designer and was just thinking about what the new trends are for next year! I’ve concidered BM ” shadow” as a color for a piece of furniture. I am putting in faux wood porcelain tiles in my kitchen, living room, hall areas and it was even a contender if I painted my kitchen cabinets because it matches shades in the gray tile. However, it’s slightly too purple. But I have a little accent table that it would look cute painted. Also like the Sherwin Williams color, poised taupe. I have SW mega greige in my breakfast nook and fireplace, SW sea salt in my living room, and BM revere pewter in my craft room! And a soft turquoise by Glidden in my art space!
Stumped in SF says
QUESTION: I am seriously thinking about repainting my stucco-San-Francisco home in Shadow (also, because I have been looking far and wide for a much-needed color). It is currently a faded “Spring Moss”, very similar to the 2017 Pantone color of the year, Greenery. I have a charcoal grey, shingle roof, a large white vinyl street facing window with bright white trim that has a black wrought-iron ledge, and grey-black-white terrazzo staircase. I have a patch of grass in front with a mature all-year green tree (similar to a Cajeput tree) in front. I have an old, faded, wooden door that I’m wondering what color I could paint while I figure out whether to keep it or get a whole new one. But that would depend on the house color. Do you think Shadow would work for an east-facing home that gets a lot of morning light?
heather says
Shadow might be a bit too much for a whole home exterior paint color. You may want to consider Poised Taupe it’s a gorgeous neutral taupe with a slight purple undertone – you can see more about it in the post I did here: https://www.settingforfour.com/paint-color-2017-sherwin-williams/. Good luck!
Barbara Basaraba says
Thanks for sharing the 2017 colours. I love the Shadow and will be making some updates at home.
Ivonne Walters says
Shadow color is too dark for my taste. I love Pantone’s color of the year-green. It’s fresh, light and natural. You can never go wrong with Taupe. I love your website, it’s user friendly and the decor ideas are great!
Diana says
I am thinking about doing my LR and Kitchen ceilings in Shadow, my walls in Stormy Monday, trim and cabinets in Cloud Cover. But I’m wondering if maybe I should do the walls in the Cloud Cover and the cabinets in Smoky Monday?
Ina Stashonsky says
Thanks to your blog I chose to paint a room with the color shadow!!! Just love the vibrant purple!
heather says
Yay!! That’s fabulous Ina!! I’m so glad you found inspiration at my blog and love Shadow!! I bet it is gorgeous in real life! xo Heather
Melanie says
I wanted a cozy AND dramatic guest room, so I am painting it in BM Shadow with BM Simply White trim, ceiling, cabinets and closet doors. To add more drama, I am hanging a gilded pendant light from the ceiling and using gold-leaf frames on the art work in the room.
heather says
Your design and decor ideas sound amazing Melanie!! I’m so glad to hear you love BM Shadow – it will look amazing in your guest bedroom! Thank you so much for sharing you decorating ideas!
Maura Iacoboni says
I have lower ceilings and plan to paint my dining room Shadow. Should I also paint the ceiling the same color? I have Simply white for all trim work and throughout most of my home. Thanks for your help!
heather says
Hi Maura – Painting the ceiling that color will really make it feel cozier, darker and smaller if that’s the look you want!
Samantha says
Hi my name Samantha. I’m in love with your front door color. Is the color this “Shadow” color?!
Thank you!
heather says
