How to Style A Holiday Chic Christmas Centerpiece:
I used the same approach I use for designing a beautiful container garden – it’s the ‘Thriller, Filler, Spiller’ method!
- Centerpiece base
Choose a round or rectangular tray, cake stand, a table runner or a marble tile to display your centerpiece. This will give your centerpiece a focal point and presence. If you just place your centerpiece items on a bare table, your centerpiece will look bare too.
2. Spiller
Use faux or real (or a mix of both!) Christmas botanicals and greens as the spiller of your holiday chic centerpiece. The spiller adds texture and color and ‘that natural Christmas look’ to your table!
You can use items like pine and cedar branches, holly branches, christmas berry picks, mistletoe, boxwood, magnolia leaves, bayleaf garlands, grapevine garland and eucalyptus branches.
I used two faux glittered pine branch picks and some real western cedar branches.
3. Thriller
Pick up to 3 decor items as the standout ‘thriller’ element of your tablescape. You can use holiday decor like my frosty glittered deer, table top Christmas trees or a vase of Christmas greenery. You can also use a few statement candle holders or even lanterns! Place your thriller pieces evenly on the table centerpiece base.
Tuck the thriller pieces into the greenery:
4. Filler
This is the last step. Christmas ornaments, balls and garland are the perfect way to fill your holiday chic centerpiece with interesting shapes, pattern and color. Place the filler around the base of your centerpiece for a festive look. Tuck them into the greenery.

Your design is not over done and you could take in the whole table decorating at one time. Sometimes tables are decorated to much just for show and not for a meal. I think you should be able to do both have a beautiful table and a lovely meal with great conversation.

Your technique is a perfect way to think of doing a tablescape! Not only does it help with the design it helps with choosing the pieces you want to use. Instead of gathering everything in sight now I know I just need a thriller, spiller & filler!! Thanks so much for posting all of your wonderful ideas, tips and hints.
