I’ve had this little folding TV Table for many years….I bought it for our oldest boy, who was 5 years old at the time, to eat at while watching Friday night cartoons in our living room.
My hubby was deployed at the time and every Friday night my little boy and I would have a ‘eat-in-the-living-room-while-watching-cartoons-dinner’ as a special treat. He loved it!
I used to come up with little ways like this to add a little fun where I could into our everyday routine, to make the week’s pass faster for both of us, until my husband returned home safe and sound.
Instead of eating at the kitchen table, on these special nights, we’d eat in our living room. I’d eat at our coffee table and since my son was little I used to set him up at this TV table to enjoy a fun dinner while watching Bugs Bunny and Road Runner reruns.
This little table was just the right size for him! It was small enough to fold up and stack away until the next time we would use it.
Later, I used it as a side table in our guest bedroom, then I moved it to our playroom.
Needless to say it’s been well loved and well used! The white paint became a bit chipped and scuffed over time so it’s just been sitting in our basement.
Since we needed a small outdoor side table for our deck I knew I could give this TV table a paint makeover and upcycle it!
I love graphic patterns and the paint dip trend right now, so I used painter’s tape and navy and gold spray paint to turn my boring white TV table into a beautiful stylish piece of outdoor furniture!
3M™ Safe-Release™ Painter's Tape – Advance + Delicate
Outdoor Spray Paint – Navy and Gold: two ‘on trend’ colors!
3M™ Safe-Release™ Painter's Tape offers a number of different types of painter’s tape: they each vary from low to medium adhesiveness.
I chose the ‘Advance+ Delicate
Surface’ 3M™ tape because it’s ideal for accent walls and stripes and I wanted to make sure none of the new paint pulled off!
Start by spray painting the table navy blue. After the first coat is dry apply a second coat. Allow to completely dry.
Now create the DIY Chevron Pattern with the 3M™ Safe-Release™ Painter's Tape!
Place 2 rows of 3M Safe Release Painter's Tape to the top of the table 3/4 inch in from the edge. Give a firm rub to all edges to ensure that no paint will bleed underneath. This 3M Safe Release Painter's Tape has Edge-Lock technology which will help prevent paint bleeding underneath too!
Next, place a row to the center of the table like this:
Decide the angle you want your chevron to be and place a row of 3M Safe Release Painter's Tape between one of the outer tape pieces and the middle piece:
Lay down another row of tape above the first piece so that the edges meet, this will act as your spacer:
Continue laying pieces of tape until you reach the other end of the table:
Continue laying pieces of tape to make the chevron pattern, make sure to rub down all of the edges firmly:
Tape under the table top and tape the legs 6 inches up from the bottom to create a painted ‘dipped’ look, again making sure to rub down firmly all tape edges:
Tape newspaper under the table top and spray paint the top of the table gold. Cover with two coats of gold spray paint, letting the first coat completely dry before applying second coat:
Flip the table over and paint the bottom of the legs with gold too!:
Once the spray paint is completely dry, remove all of the 3M Safe Release Painter's Tape.
This tape was so easy to peel off and no paint was removed- it really is “ Safe-Release™ ”!
See the sharp crisp lines? No paint bleeding at all! 3M™ Safe-Release™ Painter's Tape gives fantastic results:
Here it is all finished! I love this chevron pattern and ‘dipped’ legs!
I really enjoy sitting out on the deck now with my upcycled TV tray table to hold my morning coffee and a bouquet of flowers!
The navy and gold color combination looks gorgeous together. This DIY dipped chevron table adds a perfect pop of stylish color and pattern to my outdoor sitting area!
