I must confess I have an obsession with dough bowls! There is something so comforting about it’s shape and rustic simplicity…knowing that someone held the edges to turn and knead bread for their family….knowing that someone took the time and love to make it out of one solid piece of wood!
In these times of mass manufacturing, veneers and pressed wood, handmade and hand carved items just seem to have so much more meaning.
Actual hands went into making this dough bowl….not motors or computerized plans or assembly lines…just one person and some effort and time.
So I was absolutely thrilled to find a very plain, unstained dough bowl in my local thrift store and give it an easy, quick makeover!
Here’s how I made this beautiful DIY Antiqued Dough Bowl Centerpiece:
This is the dough bowl that I scored at my local thrift store…for…wait for it…..$3.00!! Seriously, I couldn’t believe the price tag either!
It was unstained but beautifully carved and made by hand!
This is such a quick and easy makeover! I just added 2 coats of Minwax Dark Walnut mixed with Minwax American Colonial Wood Finish stain (equal amounts of both stains mixed in a plastic cup) to antique it, one coat of Minwax Paste Finishing wax to seal it and turned it into this!:
Look at the gorgeous grain and the wood tones! Love it!
I knew the perfect place to showcase it would be my coffee table! I filled my antiqued dough bowl with a collection of driftwood, feathers and seashells that I collected the last time I visited my home town, which is on the shores of a crystal clear lake.
I love how my dough bowl centerpiece looks with my birch bark candles and real birch logs (from my backyard!). I stacked the birch logs in wine crates and placed them under my coffee table…
Luv how this dough bowl pairs with our hardwood floors too!
Every room needs rhythm, balance and contrast. The glittery birch candles and Waverly vintage bird pillows in pretty shades of grey and blue give a fabulous pop of contrast to our leather tuxedo-style sectional sofa!
The antique dough bowl adds contrast to our glam chrome coffee table too.
I’m so happy with the combination of modern and rustic design that I’ve created in our living room…..
Rustic balancing modern…. with the help of a DIY antiqued dough bowl centerpiece!
