Turn Kids Art Into DIY Tea Towels

Do you have piles of artwork that your kiddos have brought home from school, daycare or made at home?  Want another way to display their artwork other than hanging it on the fridge or framing it?

Here's a fantastic way to display your kids art in a space we spend a lot of the time; the kitchen!  So turn your kid’s art into DIY tea towels: your kiddos will feel so special and proud to see their drawings on display.

This would also be an excellent gift idea for grandparents, aunts, uncles and teachers!  Birthdays, Christmas or 'just because'!

My Derby Hat Won First Place Prize!

Hello everyone!  This weekend my husband and I were invited to a Kentucky Derby Party to celebrate the 2012 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs and to watch the race on TV.

We had so much fun!

Here are some of the ladies with their beautiful hats:

And here is mine - which won First Place Prize!

Being Canadian, I styled my Derby hat with some Canadian culture: Red maple leaves, a beaver and a Canadian flag!  You can find the tutorial for my DIY Kentucky Derby Hat - Canadian Version! here.

I had so much fun making it!

I won this beautiful screen printed tote bag!  I am so excited - I usually don't win anything, ever...
I think I will use it as a beach bag.

So here is a funny story about the evening...

We played a game at the party where we 'bet' on a horse and the person who chose the winner received a prize as well.  My horse 'Trinniburg' was in 2nd place for most of the race (at the last 10 seconds ended up at the back of the pack!) but I actually thought it might win the race.  Anyway, I was so excited, cheering my horse on through the TV and pumping my arms (somehow this was going to help it!), that with all my movements in excitement the beaver on my hat fell off!  So classy right??  Ha!  Anyway good thing it didn't take anybody's eye out or I could have been sued for 'assault by Canadian beaver'! Ha Ha!  Anyway, we had a fun time!

Did you watch the Derby this weekend?

DIY Kentucky Derby Hat - Canadian Version

Hello everyone!  Today is the Kentucky Derby and my husband and I are invited to a Derby Party!  There will be prizes for the person that chooses the winning horse and also for the best Derby Hat.

To celebrate the esteemed tradition of wearing big and beautiful hats at the Derby (and who doesn't like to win a prize!!) I transformed a hat I had bought at TJ Maxx last week.

Since we're Canadian, I am 'hooking my hat up' with some Canadian culture!

Here's the hat before:

And here it is after:

The front....Maple Leaves galore:

The back.....See the cute little beaver and the Canadian flag?:

I love how it turned out, it was so much fun to make!

I made this hat so that I could remove everything that I added (since the next time I wear this hat it probably won't be at a Derby party!).

This is how I made it:

Supplies:

Faux maple leaves - Michaels
Plastic Beaver - Michaels
Paper Wrapped Wire Stems, 6 pack - Michaels
Hot Glue
Hot Glue Gun
Needle
White Thread
Canadian Flag Toothpick.

Tutorial:

Take a paper wrapped wire stem and bent it at the end to form a hook.
Hook it onto the black banding in the flower area so it doesn't show.
Attach maple leaves to the wire stem with hot glue.
Attach beaver onto one maple leaf with hot glue.
Hand sew this leaf onto brim of hat with white thread (so the thread will not show underneath).
Poke the toothpick into the same maple leaf and bend the bottom of the toothpick to make a small L shape.
Hotglue this part of the toothpick onto the bottom of the maple leaf so that the toothpick flag will stand up straight.

That's it!  You're done!!

I hope I win a prize....do you think I might be a contender to win one?

Happy Kentucky Derby Day!!!
