This DIY project inspiration occurred to me while I was link party hopping recently and saw a wonderful post by the talented blogger Lindsay Ballard at Living with Lindsay .  Lindsay is a DIY’er and home decor crafter with a zeal for budget decorating as big as Texas. Check out her amazing blog chock full of on trend DIY projects and tutorials for your home.

She has a fabulous tutorial for how to make beautiful DIY moss balls.  I knew immediately when I saw how stunning her’s looked and how easy they seemed to be to make, that I wanted to craft these beauties for my own home.  To celebrate spring, I set sights on making a few for an apothecary jar in my kitchen and my fireplace mantle.

So off to Michaels I went to buy moss and Styrofoam balls.  I bought this most amazing shade of chartreuse green Reindeer Moss.

So, what’s reindeer moss???  Reindeer mosses were originally named for their value as a food source for reindeer and caribou in the plant’s northern range. Reindeer moss is really a lichen, not a moss.

I love its texture and the beautiful yellow-green color is perfect for spring!

(The photo above is the true color of the moss…not sure why my close-up shot seems to have washed the color out!)

Cost breakdown:

Reindeer Moss  – $8.99
3″ Styrofoam balls, package of 6 – $7.67
Total cost per moss ball – $2.78!

I tried to attach the moss like Lindsay demonstrates in her tutorial, with straight pins, but for some reason my moss just wasn’t cooperating.  Not one to be discouraged, I then tried to attach it with Mod-Podge (love this stuff), but it just wasn’t making the moss stick.

So, for attempt number three….I pulled out my trusty glue gun which worked like a charm!

Easy, fast and fabulous!

This is how they turned out!
