Ooh La La French Gray Trimmed Kitchen Towels

Hello everyone!

Today I am sharing a tutorial on my latest DIY project for the kitchen - French Gray Trimmed Kitchen Towels. Very Ooh La La!!!

I am loving gray home decor right now and am adding it to my home - room by room.

The gray ribbon coordinates really well with this gorgeous Dwell Studio tablecloth I purchased last year at Target.

These towels fit in so beautifully with my white kitchen and love of gray:

I just love how the stripes turned out!  For one thing they are straight!  Yay!

I have to admit my first attempt was horrible!  ( I tried to iron the ribbon onto the towel with 'Stitch Witchery' which ended up squeezing out from under the ribbon and melting all over my iron...what a mess!)

So I just ended up sewing the ribbon onto the towel.

Considering I have never sewn ribbon onto anything (and am not a very experienced sewer) I wasn't sure if this attempt would work either...But it did, with the help of pins to hold it in place.

So......don't worry if you're not an experienced sewer, either!  This tutorial is very easy.

Supplies:

1 pack of white kitchen towels - Wallmart $ 3.44.

1 roll of Offray Opal Gray ribbon - Wallmart $ 1.97.  (This is a gorgeous light French Gray colour).

Gray thread - had in my supplies

------------
Total cost for two custom kitchen towels: $ 5.41!

Tutorial:

Wash and dry towels.

Cut the end of the ribbon straight across. The ribbon has a shiny side and a matte side.  I sewed the ribbon onto the towel so that the matte side faces out.

Fold 1/4 inch of the ribbon's raw edge under so that the matte side faces out.

Lay the ribbon 2 inches from one end of the towel.  Place the pressed-under edge so that it meets one long edge of the towel like this:

Pin the ribbon in 3 places along the towel.

Cut the other end of the ribbon about 1.5 inches longer than the width of the towel.  The ribbon will tend to 'shorten' as you sew so if you cut the ribbon exactly to the width of the towel, the ribbon will be too short.

Starting at the end of the ribbon that is folded under, begin to sew close to the edge of the ribbon.  (Ignore the green painters tape.  I put it there for a previous sewing project as a 2 inch marking guide).

Remove pins as you sew. Once the other end of the ribbon is 1/2 inch from the needle, fold the edge under.  This will make sure you have the exact length of ribbon needed.

Continue to sew the other 3 sides of the ribbon so that you end  up where you began sewing.

Sew a second row of ribbon 2 inches higher than the last row.

Voila, you are done!

I really love how these towels turned out.  I was surprised how quick and easy they were to make! And so inexpensive too!!  (Must make some more for hostess gifts!)

    1. Hi Kate! Thanks for visiting! Maybe you could borrow a sewing machine from a friend or pick one up through Craigslist cheap...they are pretty easy to use once you learn how to thread the machine and the bobbin. I took an inexpensive morning class at a local fabric shop to learn how to thread the machine, wind a bobbin and basic sewing techniques...Then you can make your curtains, and pillow covers for your home too. You can do it!!!!

    1. Thanks for following Lori!! Believe me I am not an 'experienced sewer at all....you CAN DO IT!!! I took a morning class a few years back at a fabric shop (everyone brought their own machines to the class to learn how to work with their own machine) to learn basic things like how to thread my machine, make a bobbin, and basic sewing techniques. It was only a 3 hour class but so informative. Just an idea :)
